Overview
First Meaningful Paint (FMP) identifies the moment when the 'hero' elements of a page (like a large image or a headline) are rendered. It is intended to capture the point at which the user feels the page is actually useful.
Evolution
FMP has largely been superseded by Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) in modern performance auditing tools like Lighthouse, as LCP is more standardized and easier to measure reliably across different types of websites.
Context
While FMP is no longer a primary metric, the concept of identifying when 'meaningful' content appears remains central to user-centric performance optimization.
