Overview
Even though they look flat, the surfaces of a CPU and a heat sink have tiny imperfections. Air is a poor conductor of heat, so these gaps create resistance. Thermal paste (or thermal grease) fills these gaps to ensure maximum heat transfer.
Composition
Usually made of a silicone base containing thermally conductive particles like silver, ceramic, or carbon.
