Overview
Heat sinks are typically made of aluminum or copper, which have high thermal conductivity. They feature a large surface area (fins) to maximize contact with the surrounding air.
Function
Heat is conducted from the component (like a CPU) into the base of the heat sink and then spreads to the fins, where it is carried away by airflow (often assisted by a fan).
