Overview
Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP) is the industry-standard alternative to Cisco's HSRP. It allows a group of routers to function as a single virtual router.
Key Roles
- Master Router: The router currently forwarding traffic for the virtual IP.
- Backup Routers: Routers waiting to take over if the Master fails.
Key Differences from HSRP
- VRRP is an open standard (RFC 5798).
- Uses the term 'Master' instead of 'Active'.
- Can use the real IP address of an interface as the virtual IP.
