Overview

Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP) is the industry-standard alternative to Cisco's HSRP. It allows a group of routers to function as a single virtual router.

Key Roles

  • Master Router: The router currently forwarding traffic for the virtual IP.
  • Backup Routers: Routers waiting to take over if the Master fails.

Key Differences from HSRP

  • VRRP is an open standard (RFC 5798).
  • Uses the term 'Master' instead of 'Active'.
  • Can use the real IP address of an interface as the virtual IP.
