Anthropic quietly tests removing Claude Code from Pro plan, sparking developer backlash

Anthropic removed Claude Code from its Pro subscription page in an unannounced test affecting 2% of new users, causing confusion and frustration among developers who assumed it was a permanent change.

Anthropic has sparked confusion and frustration among developers by quietly removing Claude Code from its Pro subscription plan in what the company describes as a limited test affecting only a small percentage of new users.

The company's head of growth, Amol Avasare, later clarified on social media that this was merely an experiment running on approximately 2% of new prosumer signups, with existing Pro and Max subscribers unaffected.

However, the lack of clear communication about this test led many developers to assume the change was permanent. The confusion was compounded by inconsistent information across Anthropic's website - while the pricing page showed Claude Code removed from Pro, the Claude Code product page still stated that the Pro plan provides access to the code generation tool. When this reporter accessed Claude Code via CLI, the terminal output still displayed "Claude Pro."

When queried about the discrepancy, Claude.ai insisted that the Pro plan includes Claude Code, but cited documentation updated that same day which only mentioned the Max plan.

The timing and execution of this test raised eyebrows in the developer community. Anthropic apparently believed updating its public-facing pricing page would only affect a subset of users rather than the entire internet, a miscalculation that led to widespread speculation and concern.

In his social media post, Avasare provided context for why Anthropic is considering changes to its subscription structure. He explained that when Max was launched a year ago, it didn't include Claude Code, Cowork didn't exist, and long-running agents weren't common workflows. Since then, engagement per subscriber has increased significantly, and the way people use Claude subscriptions has fundamentally changed.

"We've made small adjustments along the way (weekly caps, tighter limits at peak), but usage has changed a lot and our current plans weren't built for this," Avasare wrote. "So we're looking at different options to keep delivering a great experience for users."

This testing comes amid broader challenges for Anthropic as it grapples with capacity constraints. The company has been taking steps to limit usage of its AI models to manage demand, a problem also faced by competitors like GitHub and Google. Claude has surged in popularity recently, with projects like OpenClaw enabling developers to create agents using Claude models.

The fundamental economics are challenging for Anthropic - subscription plans charge far less than the book value of tokens consumed, sometimes by a factor of ten or more. Last month, the company introduced usage limits to encourage off-peak usage, similar to how power utilities manage energy consumption.

Predictably, Claude subscribers venting in online forums resent what many assumed was a permanent downgrade to their plans. Some noted that Anthropic appears to be steering former Pro subscribers toward cheaper-to-use Chinese models like Minimax, Qwen, Kimi, and GLM.

What's particularly striking about this transition isn't just that it happened, but the lack of coherent communication to customers. While Avasare promised that existing subscribers would receive plenty of notice before any changes affecting them, the initial test was executed without any warning or clear announcement.

This approach may reflect Anthropic's calculation that individual customers paying $20 per month don't warrant the same level of communication as enterprise clients. However, this could backfire with enterprise customers who value predictability and may worry that Anthropic doesn't prioritize customer relations.

Avasare acknowledged this concern, promising customers they "Will hear it from us, not a screenshot on X or Reddit." The irony wasn't lost on observers that this reassurance was delivered via a post on X, the very platform where the initial confusion spread.

As Anthropic continues to test different subscription models and usage limitations, the incident serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between experimentation and customer trust in the competitive AI market. The company's ability to communicate changes clearly and maintain developer confidence will be crucial as it navigates the challenges of scaling its services while managing costs.
