Garmin has deployed a significant software update targeting navigation reliability for its premium multisport watches. The surprise Beta Version 21.17 release specifically addresses GPS-related failures that could disrupt outdoor activities.

The update resolves a critical issue where watches would terminate navigation sessions when losing GPS signal—a particular concern for backcountry hikers and trail runners. This fix ensures navigation continues once signal reacquires, preventing mid-activity disruptions.

Additional enhancements include:

  • Restored data fields in Active Navigation mode after backup restoration
  • Three-second confirmation delay for backup operations to prevent accidental triggers
  • Improved readability on the Portal watch face when using red accent colors with Red Shift enabled

Garmin temporarily disabled aviation, diving, and ECG functions in this beta, indicating these features require further refinement before public release. The selective rollout currently reaches 50% of enrolled Beta Program participants using compatible devices (Enduro 3, Fenix E, Fenix 8, Tactix 8).

This update follows extensive testing through Version 21.16, resolving four documented bugs. While not yet a stable release, Beta Version 21.17 demonstrates Garmin's focus on strengthening core functionality before adding new capabilities to their high-end wearables.
