Google has started rolling out the ability for users to change their primary @gmail.com address while retaining their account history and data, addressing a long-requested feature.

Google has begun rolling out a significant update that allows users to change their primary @gmail.com email address, addressing a longstanding limitation of the service. This change means users no longer need to create entirely new accounts to update their email identities, preserving their existing data and account history.
When users change their primary address, their previous @gmail.com address becomes an alias rather than being discontinued. According to Google's updated support documentation, "You'll receive emails to both your old and new addresses. The data saved in your account won't be affected." This includes all existing emails, photos, Drive files, and other account-associated information. Both addresses remain functional for signing into Google services like Gmail, YouTube, and Google Drive.
Security professionals note this addresses multiple user pain points. "For years, users created secondary accounts to escape embarrassing or outdated addresses, fragmenting their digital footprint," explains email security researcher Mara Reynolds. "Consolidating under a professional address while maintaining history reduces phishing risks from abandoned accounts."
The process involves important limitations:
- Address changes are limited to once per 12-month period
- The new address becomes permanent and cannot be deleted
- Users can revert to their original address at any time
- The feature is gradually rolling out and may not be immediately available to all users
To check availability:
- Visit the Google Account email settings
- Navigate to Personal Info > Email > Google Account email
- Follow on-screen instructions if the option appears
Digital identity experts recommend:
- Verify address availability before initiating changes
- Update critical services (banking, 2FA) immediately after changing
- Monitor both addresses during transition period
- Use Gmail's plus addressing (e.g., [email protected]) for new registrations
While gradual rollout continues, this update eliminates the need for workarounds like email forwarding from new accounts, simplifying digital identity management for Gmail's 1.8 billion users.
