OnePlus has reportedly cancelled its anticipated Open 2 foldable smartphone despite advanced development stages, marking another delay in the brand's foldable roadmap.

OnePlus has cancelled development of its second-generation foldable phone according to new industry sources, continuing the brand's extended absence from the foldable market. The original OnePlus Open launched in 2023 to positive reviews but hasn't received a successor since, with both 2024 and 2025 passing without new foldable releases.
The Open 2 was reportedly scheduled for a July 2026 launch as OnePlus' flagship summer product before being abruptly cancelled. Industry informants indicate the device had reached advanced testing phases, suggesting hardware was nearly finalized. This cancellation marks the second consecutive year OnePlus has delayed its foldable lineup refresh.
According to specifications obtained during development, the Open 2 featured:
- Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor
- Dual displays: 6.6" cover screen (32MP selfie) and 8.12" folding display (20MP selfie)
- Triple 50MP rear camera array
- 165Hz refresh rates on both displays
- 6,000mAh battery with 80W wired/50W charging
- Up to 16GB RAM and 1TB storage
- Sophisticated black faux leather finish
- Chassis design inspired by Huawei Mate X7
The cancellation appears limited to global markets. The same hardware platform is expected to launch in China as the Oppo Find N6, though potentially with camera differences - rumors suggest Oppo's version may feature a 200MP main sensor instead of the triple 50MP configuration planned for OnePlus.

This development highlights the complex relationship between OnePlus and its parent company Oppo. While both brands share technology resources, their product strategies increasingly diverge in global markets. Foldable devices require significant R&D investment, and this cancellation suggests OnePlus may be reevaluating its position in the competitive foldable segment where Samsung, Huawei, and Xiaomi have established strong footholds.
Industry analysts note that extending the Open's lifecycle to nearly three years places OnePlus at a disadvantage in the rapidly evolving foldable market. The company now faces pressure to deliver meaningful innovation whenever it eventually releases its next foldable device, as competitors continue advancing display technology, hinge mechanisms, and software optimization.
For consumers who embraced the original OnePlus Open, this cancellation means extended wait times for hardware upgrades. OnePlus continues supporting the original model with software updates, but hardware improvements like the rumored 165Hz displays and upgraded chipset won't materialize this year.
Market observers will monitor whether OnePlus shifts focus to conventional smartphones like the upcoming OnePlus 15T and rumored OnePlus 16 series, or if the brand will attempt a late 2026 foldable release with redesigned hardware.
