Rockstar Games will offer a free upgrade for Grand Theft Auto V and GTA Online owners on PS4 and Xbox One starting Thursday, June 18, the company said on its Newswire.

The upgrade gives console owners access to the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions, which Rockstar sells as separate releases. Players can migrate Story Mode saves and GTA Online progress, then use current-gen features such as Hao's Special Works vehicles, Career Progress rewards and upgraded performance options.

GTA 5 has taken an unusual path through console generations. Rockstar launched the game in September 2013 for PS3 and Xbox 360, then brought it to PS4 and Xbox One in November 2014. The PC version followed in April 2015. Rockstar released the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S editions in March 2022 with visual upgrades and new GTA Online content.

That 2022 release split the player base by purchase path. PS4 owners who wanted the PS5 version had to buy the newer edition. Xbox One owners faced the same choice on Xbox Series X|S. The June 18 upgrade removes that extra purchase for players who stayed on the older console versions.

The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions offer the best console version of GTA 5. Rockstar lists technical improvements, faster access to newer GTA Online systems and progress migration as the main benefits. Players who use GTA Online will gain more from the upgrade than Story Mode players because Rockstar keeps adding online vehicles, missions and reward tracks.

Rockstar also said GTA Online will add The Kortz Center Heist in July. The company has kept GTA Online active for more than a decade through heists, cars, businesses and seasonal updates, which helps explain why GTA 5 still matters while Rockstar prepares Grand Theft Auto VI.

The timing also gives Rockstar a clean way to pull older GTA 5 players back before GTA 6 arrives. Take-Two executives have begun doing more public interviews around the next game, and the company has shifted attention toward what may become its largest release cycle. GTA 6 has dominated gaming discussion since Rockstar released its first trailer, but GTA 5 remains the live product that players can buy and play today.

For buyers, the free upgrade changes the value equation. Players who own GTA 5 on PS4 or Xbox One should wait for the June 18 upgrade path instead of buying the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S version. New buyers should still compare platform prices because Rockstar has sold several editions across Story Mode and GTA Online.

The upgrade suits players who skipped the 2022 current-gen release, GTA Online users who want access to newer systems and anyone moving an old console save to newer hardware. Players who own the PC version get no benefit from this console upgrade program.
