Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Brings Intel Xeon Support, But Some User-Space Packages Still Missing

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS will support many new Intel Xeon features, though some user-space libraries remain un packaged.

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS is set to deliver robust support for Intel Xeon server CPU features, though some user-space packages remain absent from the Ubuntu archive, requiring third-party repositories or manual compilation.

Canonical engineer Serkan Uygungelen has detailed the state of Intel Xeon support across Ubuntu releases, highlighting both the progress made and the gaps that still exist. While kernel support for many advanced features is present, the corresponding user-space libraries and tools aren't always packaged within Ubuntu's main repositories.

Key Features and Their Support Status

Intel Software Guard Extensions (SGX)

  • Base functionality has been available since Ubuntu 22.04 LTS
  • Kernel support exists, but user-space packages remain un packaged
  • Intel maintains its own APT repository for the Intel SGX SDK
  • A packaging request exists for a "linux-sgx" package, but it's unclear if this will be ready for Ubuntu 26.04 LTS

Intel DSA 2.0 (Data Streaming Accelerator)

  • Available in Ubuntu 25.10 and will be included in Ubuntu 26.04 LTS
  • Provides hardware acceleration for data movement and processing

Intel IAA 2.0 (Infrastructure Acceleration Accelerator)

  • Kernel support is present in recent Ubuntu versions
  • Missing: Intel Query Processing Library (QPL) user-space code
  • Users must rely on third-party repositories or compile from source

**CXL 2.0 (Compute Express Link)**r- Supported in Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with HWE kernel stack (Linux 6.9+)

  • Will also be part of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS
  • Enables high-bandwidth, low-latency connections between CPUs and accelerators

Intel Trust Domain Extensions (TDX)

  • Preview support in Ubuntu 25.10
  • Full support enabled in Ubuntu 26.04 LTS
  • Provides hardware-enforced isolation for virtual machines

Intel DPLL (Digital Phase-Locked Loop)

  • Framework support coming to Ubuntu 26.04 LTS
  • Improves clock synchronization and power management

Intel QuickAssist Technology (QAT)

  • Gen 4 and Gen 5 already supported in Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
  • Provides hardware acceleration for cryptography and compression

Legacy Support

  • AVX2 has been supported in Ubuntu Linux for years
  • Provides advanced vector extensions for improved floating-point performance

The situation reflects a common challenge in Linux distributions: kernel support often arrives before user-space tools are packaged. For organizations relying on these Intel Xeon features, this means either waiting for official packaging, using Intel's repositories, or building from source.

The full details are available in Serkan Uygungelen's post on the Ubuntu Discourse, which provides a comprehensive overview of the current state and future plans for Intel Xeon feature support in Ubuntu.
