When I first started examining network traffic from the websites and applications I use daily, I considered it a harmless curiosity—a way to understand how the digital tools I rely on actually work. What began as a technical hobby quickly evolved into something more troubling: a front-row seat to systemic security failures that I couldn't fix, no matter how hard I tried.

The pattern emerged gradually. I'd open a tracking page for a package delivery, see the information I needed, and then wonder: what else is happening behind the scenes? What data is being collected? Who else might have access to it? These questions led me to open browser developer tools, and what I found there changed my perspective on digital security entirely.

Take, for example, a courier service specializing in prescription medication deliveries. When tracking a time-sensitive delivery, I discovered that the JSON payload included not just my package information, but the complete delivery route for every customer that day. Names, addresses, package contents, driver payment information, hourly rates, and GPS coordinates were all exposed. After delivery, the system even displayed signatures and porch photographs—not just mine, but everyone on the route.

This wasn't a one-time discovery. I found essentially the same vulnerability in two different courier companies using separate software systems. In one case, the exposure was even more severe: a Stripe private key was accessible through the same interface. These weren't subtle configuration errors or edge-case vulnerabilities. They were fundamental design flaws that exposed sensitive medical information, financial data, and personal identifiers.

My initial reaction followed the responsible disclosure playbook I'd learned: report the vulnerability, allow time for remediation, then move on. But here's where the story takes an unexpected turn. These companies had no security contact information listed. Staff email addresses weren't publicly available or guessable. Messages sent to any listed addresses bounced back. The standard channels for reporting security issues simply didn't exist.

I tried alternative approaches. I contacted the pharmacy using the service, explaining the data exposure. The pharmacist was shocked and sympathetic. I spoke with my prescriber, who agreed this was a serious problem. For my next delivery, the pharmacy switched to UPS—a company with its own security considerations but without this particular vulnerability. Yet I couldn't determine if this was a change for everyone or just a special accommodation for the "miscreant who looks at her network tools."

When I switched pharmacies, I discovered the problem persisted. The new pharmacy used the same leaky courier services. This realization led to an important insight: the burden of fixing these vulnerabilities couldn't fall on individual consumers or even individual healthcare providers. The structural problem—companies lacking basic security reporting mechanisms—remained unaddressed.

The emotional journey was perhaps the most revealing aspect. I became increasingly frustrated, even upset, about my inability to resolve what I saw as a clear security issue. A friend offered perspective that proved transformative: "It's not your responsibility to fix this, and you've done everything you can (and more than you had to)."

This advice reframed the entire situation. Some problems exist in systems too large or too broken for individual intervention to matter. The vulnerability would remain until the company either experienced a breach, faced regulatory consequences, or underwent leadership changes that prioritized security. My efforts, while well-intentioned, couldn't accelerate that timeline.

The decision not to publicly name the companies involved reflects a nuanced understanding of harm reduction. Public disclosure might satisfy a desire for accountability, but it wouldn't necessarily lead to fixes. More importantly, it could create legal liability for me while potentially exposing more people to risk if bad actors hadn't already discovered the vulnerabilities.

Instead, I notified the healthcare providers I knew about the issue, leaving it to them to decide whether and how to act. This approach acknowledges a difficult truth: in complex systems, responsibility is distributed in ways that can make individual action feel both necessary and futile simultaneously.

This experience reveals broader patterns in software security. Many companies, particularly those providing specialized services like medical courier delivery, operate without basic security infrastructure. They lack bug bounty programs, security contact information, or even awareness of standard vulnerability disclosure practices. When these companies handle sensitive data—medical records, payment information, home addresses—the consequences extend far beyond typical data breaches.

The medical context adds another layer of complexity. Prescription deliveries involve not just location data but potentially information about health conditions, medications, and treatment patterns. The exposure of delivery routes creates risks beyond identity theft: it could reveal when homes are unoccupied, what medical supplies someone receives, or patterns in their healthcare routine.

What makes this situation particularly frustrating is the preventability of the core issue. Proper API design, authentication mechanisms, and data minimization practices could have prevented these exposures entirely. The fact that multiple companies using different software systems all made similar mistakes suggests either common flawed patterns in development or a fundamental lack of security awareness in certain sectors.

The experience also highlights the limitations of individual agency in digital security. While we often hear about the importance of personal responsibility for online safety—using strong passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, being cautious about sharing information—some vulnerabilities exist at a systemic level that individuals cannot address regardless of their diligence.

This raises uncomfortable questions about where responsibility truly lies. Should regulatory bodies impose stricter requirements on companies handling sensitive data? How do we protect consumers when the companies they rely on operate without fundamental security awareness?

The answer, I've come to realize, involves accepting that some problems require collective rather than individual solutions. The responsibility for fixing these issues ultimately falls on the companies that create them, the regulators who oversee them, and the collective pressure we can apply as consumers and citizens.

Sometimes, the most responsible action is acknowledging the limits of what we can fix—and directing our energy toward the problems where our efforts can actually make a difference.
