Pricing Structure and Storage Changes

The refreshed MacBook Pros now start at $2,199 for the 14-inch model and $2,699 for the 16-inch version, representing a $200 increase compared to their M4 Pro counterparts. The M5 MacBook Air lineup has also seen price hikes of $100, with starting prices set at $1,099 for the 13-inch model and $1,299 for the 15-inch version.

To justify these price increases, Apple has doubled the onboard storage across the lineup. The M5 Pro now comes with 1 TB of flash storage, while the Max variant ships with 2 TB. The MacBook Air's storage capacity has also been doubled to 512 GB. Despite these improvements, industry analysts suggest that the actual cost of additional storage to Apple is likely significantly lower than the price premium being charged, with NAND flash prices hovering around $0.20 per gigabyte.

The price adjustments come amid a global RAM shortage driven by increased demand for DRAM and NAND flash components, which the industry attributes to the AI boom. Apple appears to be using the storage upgrades to offset higher DRAM costs while maintaining the perception of value for consumers.

Technical Specifications of the M5 Series

The new M5 chips feature a heterogeneous multi-die design that pairs a CPU compute die with up to 18 cores with a GPU die that has up to 40 cores. This represents a significant architectural shift, as Apple has used multiple dies in previous M-series silicon like the M1 Ultra, but those dies were essentially identical. The new approach is more akin to Intel and AMD's latest generation of high-end mobile processors.

The CPU cores are configured in a big-little arrangement, with Apple branding its fastest cores as "super" cores across the M5 lineup. The M5 Pro and Max introduce an all-new performance core optimized for multithreaded workloads. Both the M5 Pro and M5 Max can be configured with up to 6 super and 12 performance cores. Unlike previous efficiency cores, these performance cores appear to be frequency-optimized variants of the super core specifically tuned for multithreaded workloads.

The standard M5, by comparison, features four super cores and six efficiency cores.

GPU Enhancements and AI Performance

The GPU offerings have been significantly upgraded, with the M5 Pro offering up to 20 graphics cores (twice that of the standard M5) and the M5 Max topping out at 40 cores. A notable addition is an integrated neural accelerator—similar to Nvidia's tensor cores—that promises substantial improvements for matrix multiplication operations.

Apple claims that the top-specced M5 Max is up to 3.8x faster than the previous generation for image generation and 4x faster for large language model (LLM) prompt processing. Memory bandwidth has also increased by approximately 12 percent, reaching 307 GB/s on the M5 Pro and 614 GB/s on the M5 Max.

For non-AI workloads, Apple reports that the M5 Pro delivers up to 1.4x faster performance than the M4 Pro in Maxon's Redshift renderer and up to 1.6x faster gaming performance in ray-traced titles such as Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition.

Design and Connectivity Features

The M5 Pro and Max chips are currently only available in Apple's MacBook Pro chassis, which has seen minimal design changes since the original M1 Pro and Max models in late 2021. The systems retain the same 14 or 16-inch Liquid Retina displays with up to 1,600 nits of peak HDR brightness and up to 1,000 nits for regular content.

The I/O configuration remains unchanged, featuring three Thunderbolt 5 ports, a full-sized HDMI, and an SDXC card slot. Battery life is claimed to be slightly improved, with Apple stating that the refreshed MacBook Pros can now last up to 24 hours, though real-world performance will depend heavily on applications and workflow.

The M5 MacBook Air uses the same chassis as the previous generation and is available with either 13 or 15-inch displays offering 500 nits of brightness. While the MacBook Pros feature Thunderbolt 5 connectivity, the Air models (and the base M5 MacBook Pro) utilize the older Thunderbolt 4 standard.

A significant connectivity upgrade across the new MacBooks is the introduction of Apple's N1 network chip, which brings Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 support to the platforms.

Market Implications

The price increases reflect broader industry trends affecting the PC market. As memory costs continue to rise due to high demand from AI applications and data centers, consumers and businesses may face higher prices for devices with substantial memory and storage configurations.
