BMW reveals technical specifications for its first electric M3, featuring four independent motors, a 100kWh battery, and simulated gear shifts, set to coexist alongside combustion models starting 2027.

BMW has officially detailed its electric M3 architecture, confirming a radical reengineering of its performance icon for 2027. The flagship model will abandon traditional mechanical components in favor of software-defined dynamics, centered around a quad-motor powertrain with one motor per wheel.

At the heart of the system lies a new central control unit that processes vehicle data significantly faster than current systems. This computer coordinates torque distribution across all four wheels, replacing mechanical differentials with intelligent torque vectoring. The setup enables seamless transitions between all-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive modes, with the front motors decoupling at the push of a button for efficiency during highway driving.

Power comes from a high-voltage battery exceeding 100kWh of usable capacity, built on an 800V architecture for rapid charging compatibility. The battery pack serves a dual purpose as a structural chassis component, contributing to overall rigidity. In a sustainability move, BMW will replace carbon fiber with natural fiber composites in select components, reducing the carbon footprint by approximately 40%.

The driving experience retains traditional M-car sensations through synthetic solutions: software simulates gear shifts and generates a bespoke sound signature emulating internal combustion engines. Despite these nods to tradition, BMW confirms the electric M3 will launch alongside the current combustion-powered G80/G81 models rather than replacing them. The S58 inline-six engine will remain available for purists.

Sales data suggests a potential Touring variant could follow. Current M3 Touring sales increased 57% in 2024, demonstrating strong demand for practical performance vehicles. While BMW hasn't confirmed an electric wagon, market indicators point to strong feasibility, particularly in regions like Germany.

Production is scheduled to begin in 2027, positioning BMW's performance division for an electric future while maintaining its combustion heritage during the transition.
